Harbour View fight for 3-2 win in Caribbean Cup
Shaquille Bradford scored twice as Harbour View came from behind to beat S.V. Robinhood of Suriname 3-2 at the National Stadium last night to climb to the top of Group B in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup (CCC).
Shaquille Cairo put Robinhood in front after 33 minutes, but Omar Thompson equalised five minutes into first-half added time.
Jamilhio Rigters restored Robinhood's advantage from the penalty spot five minutes into the second half, however, Bradford found a second equaliser five minutes later before securing the win with his second of the match after 69 minutes.
The win put Harbour View atop the group with seven points, one more than Robinhood and four ahead of Moca, who play today.
"We really give thanks for this victory. It was well fought, well sought after, well executed and rewarding.
"It's a game we knew what the stakes were, and we had to try and come away with three points. Nothing less would have been sufficient," said Harbour View's coach, Ludlow Bernard.
In an even first half, both teams had good openings. Harbour View came closest when Odorland Harding cannoned a shot off the bar and back into play.
However, Robinhood won possession, countered and from that play, won a free kick on the right. Goalkeeper Romario Palma, however, made a mess of his clearance, and the ball fell to Cairo, who fired into an empty goal from five yards.
Dimitri Andro had an excellent opportunity to add to Robinhood's advantage moments later, but Palma's brilliant stop kept the score at 1-0.
Bradford came close after he broke loose, but his tame shot failed to trouble Jonathan Fonkel in goal.
Harbour View would level just before the interval when Thompson beat Fonkel with a deflected strike from 18 yards.
Early in the second half, Harbour View fell behind again when a penalty was awarded to the visitors, which Rigters converted.
However, the hosts refused to give in and drew level in the 55th minute when Bradford broke through and slotted home.
Then, in the 69th minute, Harbour View won possession high up the field, and Bradford ran onto a pass and placed firmly past Fonkel to give them the lead for the first time.
Nevertheless, the visitors should have pulled level in the 73rd minute, when Tuur Don had Palma at his mercy but could not beat the custodian from two yards, with the latter hapless on the ground.
Today's score between Dunbeholden and Ciboa might still have Harbour View needing a win when they play their last game away to Ciboa next Thursday.
"We hope to get a result next game, which would definitely put us in the semifinals. We really want to win the zone. They will be playing at home, but we will go to Dom Rep all guns blazing to win that game," Bernard added.
