Mount Pleasant tackle Lime Hall in Peter Gould Cup final
The inaugural Peter Gould Cup preseason tournament climaxes today at Drax Hall with defending Jamaica Premier League (JPL) champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy tackling newly promoted Lime Hall in an all-St Ann final starting at 6:30 p.m.
In the precursor, Waterhouse play Humble Lion in the third-place match at 4 p.m.
Lime Hall (formerly Benfica) defeated both seasoned JPL campaigners Waterhouse and Humble Lion 1-0 on their way to the final.
They lost 1-0 to Mount Pleasant, but coach David Price argues they are highly motivated for the rematch.
Price, who replaces current general manager Alfred Barnett as coach, accepts their underdog tag but admitted that the $1 million prize money is their major incentive going into the match.
"If you reach the final of any competition, you consider that a success. The only thing left to do is to win, and being the underdogs, there is no real pressure on us," Price said.
"The $1 million would suit the team very well, and psychologically, it will boost the players. Financially, based on our status, that would probably be a significant achievement.
"It would build a mentality to be winners, the financial gain would be of great assistance, and it would help us to feel we can compete at the top level and be winners," he stated.
Mount Pleasant's sporting director, Paul Christie, said the tournament has not disappointed, and despite being the favourites, Lime Hall have shown that they must not be underestimated.
"This is why we play the game. Just looking at the participants, we would look at the finalists, and one would not have Lime Hall in the equation.
"It is a local derby, and based on the fact that Lime Hall would have qualified with Mount Pleasant for the final, this would be a treat for the people of St Ann, and we are just happy and privileged to be a part of this treat," Christie said.
Nevertheless, he said they have only one aim - to win.
"Lime Hall have made a shout that you can take them for granted at your own peril. They have a formidable team playing good football. They have beaten Waterhouse and Humble Lion, and it was a keenly contested game between Mount Pleasant and Lime Hall.
"Mount Pleasant won by a slim 1-0 margin, and the word from the Lime Hall team is that they have this Mount Pleasant team measured, and they are coming for the $1 million, but we are in it to win it," he insisted.
