Burkett on fire for St George’s
St George's College's ace forward Brian Burkett was on fire at Winchester Park on North Street yesterday.
Burkett scored four times as the hosts whipped Jose Marti High 7-2 in an ISSA/Manning Cup Group F match. Yesterday's win was St George's seventh from as many games, while Burkett lifted his goal tally for the season to 16.
St George's and St Andrew Technical are the only teams with maximum points in this season's competition.
The Neville 'Bertis' Bell-coached team remained atop the zone with maximum 21 points, five more than second-place Campion College and nine ahead of Jose Marti in third on 12 points.
The North Street-based school needs one more point from their three remaining matches to seal their place in the next phase of the competition.
"Our first objective is to qualify from the zone and basically we did that today. Now we go for our objectives in the second round. So for now it's to get everybody sharp for the next round," St George's assistant coach Marcel Gayle said. "Jose Marti played well. They provided a few scary moments for us but our goalkeeper came up trumps."
St George's took the lead through Tae-Sean Oneil after five minutes before Burkett added goals in the eighth and 17th minutes. Matthew Spence's 19th-minute strike put them 4-0 up but Shemar Hanchard got a goal back for Jose Marti from the penalty spot in the 39th minute.
After the break, Adjani Peart made it 5-1 in the 59th before Burkett added another two in the 62nd and 76th minutes. Nathan Gordon scored the Spanish Town-based Jose Marti's second goal, 12 minutes from the end.
