Waterhouse, Cavalier in stalemate
Waterhouse and Cavalier shared the points in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) clash at Sabina Park yesterday but, while Cavalier coach Rudolph Speid believed it was a fair result, Waterhouse assistant Damion Gordon argued that they should have taken all three points.
Christopher Ainsworth fired Cavalier into the lead after 33 minutes, but Denardo Thomas found the equaliser for Waterhouse five minutes before half-time.
Speid said it was a high-quality tactical game, which, in the end, a draw was a true reflection.
"It was an even game. Also, it was a high-quality game. It was a coaches' game.
"Waterhouse tried to take my game away from me. They gave me the ball and allowed me to play but showed respect. It was one of those tactical games that played out, and 1-1 is a favourable result for both teams," he said.
The game was evenly contested over the first half, with both teams having few chances to score.
Waterhouse created the best two opportunities of the period but failed to make the most of them.
Cavalier took the lead when Ainsworth's attempted cross deceived Kemar Foster in goal and flew into the top left-hand corner; however, Waterhouse pulled level minutes later when Thomas fired past Jeadine White in the 40th minute.
Waterhouse thought they took the lead moments later, but an infringement was called during the melee. Jalmaro Calvin blasted a great chance wide for Cavalier from six yards immediately after.
Both teams continued to trade attacks after the break, with only a few glimpses at goal, of which Waterhouse had the better looks and forced a couple of excellent saves from White. However, neither was able to break parity before the final whistle.
Although satisfied with a point, Gordon said three points were on the cards.
"Absolutely, we could have won. We missed a few chances, and sometimes, I think we pass too much on top of the box, but again, that allows us to work on things," he said.
The result puts Waterhouse third with seven points, while Cavalier are ninth with four.
"If you look back to last season, we are way ahead of our points tally, but we can't just look at that. We have to assess each game. Tonight was one of our better performances," Gordon said.
In the first match of the night Harbour View and Humble Lion battled to a 2-2 draw.
