Goalkeeper Williams making moves
Canada-born goalkeeper Tyrone Williams is playing in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) to boost his career, and the shot-stopper's start to life at Portmore United has been nothing but impressive.
In six starts this season, the 26-year-old has kept three clean sheets, and his performance in Portmore's 0-0 draw with Tivoli Gardens in their last match was the pick of his performances, as he produced three spectacular saves to keep the score level.
Williams is looking to put in more of those displays with the hope that he will catch the attention of the national team's coaching staff and an overseas club.
"I have played all the games this season. This is my third clean sheet, and, hopefully, we can continue with more," he said after the Tivoli match. "I just try to be focused on myself and the team. I want us to do the best we can in the league and for myself, so people can see me.
"I am taking it day by day and hopefully, people are watching and recognising me. But it all starts on the training pitch and I'll continue the focus there first. Hopefully, I can get a national team opportunity and a contract overseas again," he continued.
Williams, whose mother and father were born in Jamaica, revealed he had been coming to training with Portmore over the years and was even invited to one national Under-20 camp.
However, he went overseas and played in France's fourth tier for two years. After that contract ended, he decided to come to Jamaica to revive his career.
"I am here to see if I can get an opportunity to get into the national team and also to get a better contract somewhere else.
"That is what I am trying to achieve and, hopefully, I can do that this year. I played France National Two, which is division four. Things were good but my contract ran out and I decided to come to Jamaica.
"I had a good talk with them (Portmore) and, with these performances, I hope someone's watching. God does everything for me, so I will continue to do my best and, hopefully, I can get something as early as possible," he said.
