Associated Brands Industries Limited (ABIL), owners of Sunshine Snacks, Charles Chocolates, Devon Biscuits, and Sunshine Cereals, has pledged US$500,000 (approximately J$79.5 million) in humanitarian relief to support the people of Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

The contribution includes US$250,000 (approximately J$39.7 million) in cash to the Sandals Foundation and an additional US$250,000 worth of food and snack products to be distributed through multiple agencies across the most severely impacted communities.

"Jamaica holds a very special place in our hearts," said Nicholas Lok Jack, executive chairman of ABIL.

Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm a week ago, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness said satellite data and drone verification indicate that approximately 116,000 structures sustained severe or catastrophic damage from the hurricane.

As Jamaicans - particularly residents of western parishes - struggle to cope with the massive dislocation caused by the storm, ABIL says it is committed to standing in solidarity with the nation during the recovery process.

"We want Jamaica to know - we stand with you, shoulder to shoulder, as you rebuild stronger than ever," Lok Jack said.

The ABIL head said the partnership with the Sandals Foundation was a natural choice given its deep community presence and effectiveness in deploying aid throughout the Caribbean.

"We have partnered with the Sandals Foundation because of their proven ability to reach those most in need in a structured, credible, and compassionate way," he said. "They represent the kind of leadership and authenticity that this moment calls for."

Heidi Clarke, executive director of the Sandals Foundation, highlighted how the partnership will bring immediate and tangible help to affected families.

"The needs across Jamaica are great, but so too is the heart of our people," Clarke said.

"With ABIL's support, we'll be able to deliver food, comfort, and hope to communities that have suffered the most. This partnership reflects what the Caribbean is all about - coming together in times of challenge to lift each other up," Clarke added.
