A mother's life was cut short and her daughter injured after a taxi driver mowed them down along Young Street in Spanish Town last week.

Dead is 54-year-old Janet Wilson of Job Lane, St Catherine.

Charged in connection with the incident is 46-year-old taxi operator Sheldon Johnson of a Clarendon address, who is facing a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police reports indicate that shortly after 3:00 p.m. on March 14, Johnson was driving a Nissan AD Wagon when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The car reportedly veered into the mother and her 16-year-old daughter before crashing into another motor vehicle.

Both were seriously injured in the impact and rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital, where Wilson later died while undergoing treatment.

Her daughter remains hospitalised with serious injuries to her left hand.

Five other persons, including Johnson, were also taken to hospital. They were treated and released.

Johnson has since been charged following investigations and is expected to appear before the court shortly.

Commander of the St Catherine North Police Division, Senior Superintendent Hopeton Nicholson, confirmed the charge and urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the nation's roads.

The division has recorded three road fatalities since the start of the year.
