Belmont motorists warned as road collapses into sea
The National Works Agency (NWA) is urging motorists in Belmont, Westmoreland, to exercise extreme caution after a section of the roadway broke away and plunged into the sea today following relentless rainfall and powerful coastal waves.
Residents said they were startled by a loud crashing sound earlier in the day, only to discover that a chunk of the road had crumbled and disappeared into the surging waters below.
The NWA has moved quickly to secure the area, erecting warning signs and cordoning off the damaged section with caution tape. Preliminary assessments suggest that the road's proximity to the sea made it especially vulnerable, with high tides and constant wave action steadily eroding its foundation.
Traffic is currently being managed on a single lane, with the police assisting to maintain order and ensure public safety.
